SC Dept. of Education awards Computer Literacy Grant to Adult Education

AWARDS COMPUTER LITERACY GRANT TO
HORRY COUNTY SCHOOLS ADULT EDUCATION
| CONWAY, SC – Horry County Schools Adult & Community Education has received a grant from the South Carolina Department of Education to provide comprehensive computer literacy instruction. The award will support Adult Education’s mission of preparing students to be “Ready for Work, Ready for Life.” The curriculum will incorporate computer-based instruction and skill building programs for basic, intermediate and advanced computer applications, from basic operations, to learning how to create spreadsheets, to managing email folders and distribution lists. |

| Through Community Education, these computer literacy classes are open to the general public for $20 for five weeks of instruction. The grant guidelines specify that “community members will have access to developing and increasing the 21st Century technology skills needed for competitive employment, higher education or personal satisfaction.” Instruction will include computer operation basics; how to create word processing documents, spreadsheets and databases; learning how to explore the internet; creating email accounts; and file management systems. |

| Class sessions will be five weeks each and will consist of 10 hours of direct instruction plus 10 hours of supervised computer lab time. The first series of classes begins Monday, October 17 at both Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center, 3101 Oak Street, and Conway Education Center, 1620 Sherwood Drive. |

| More than 1400 students per year are enrolled in day or evening classes at one of two full-time or five part-time Horry County Schools Adult Education Centers. Classes are open to any student age 17 or older who has officially withdrawn from school. Classes are held Monday through Friday and students may select from flexible time slots to accommodate their individual schedules. The Centers are open from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Fridays. | Classes will be held at the MBFLC and the CEC. The classes are 2 hours per week: |
| Mondays and Wednesdays 8-9 am |
| Mondays and Wednesdays 1:3 -2:30 pm |
| Mondays and Wednesdays, 5-6 pm |
| Thursdays, 3-5 pm. |

| New class sessions begin the weeks of October 17, 2011, and for 2012 - January 9, February 13, and March 19. Each five-week class costs $20, which includes all materials and supplies. Class days and times are listed above. |
