Kathy Mishoe selected as SC Adult Education ESL Teacher of the Year
Kathy Mishoe, a teacher at the Socastee Adult Education Center, (now at Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center) was selected as the South Carolina Adult Education ESL Teacher of the Year. The award was announced at the Second Annual Adult Education ESL Conference in Columbia on March 12, 2011. More than 80 ESL teachers were nominated for the award, one from each district in the State.
Mishoe has taught for 33 years and holds certifications in General Science, Biology, Social Studies, and Middle School Science and Social Studies. Her ESL students hail from such countries as Russia, Turkey, Colombia, Korea, Brazil and Uzbekistan. In addition to helping students learn English and prepare for the citizenship exam, Mishoe also supports her students in obtaining library cards, completing tax returns, and increasing their knowledge of computers and technology.
In nominating Mishoe for the award, Adult Education Director Dr. Virginia G. Simmons stated, "Kathy always goes the extra mile for her students. She is knowledgeable and caring, appreciated by all her peers, and consistently positive in her approach to teaching."
